There was much about our region that he loved, yet his favorite subject seemed to be writing about the stern-wheelers that plied the Columbia. That passion was reflected in the title of his book, Melodic Whistles in the Columbia River Gorge. McCoy was always willing and able to provide historical perspective on the day's : White Salmon Enterprise. Early operations on the Columbia were almost exclusively confined to the lower river. The first steamboat to arrive in Oregon was the Beaver, which was built in England and arrived at Oregon City on In the s and s, ocean-going ships equipped with auxiliary steam engines were able to and did come up the lower river as far as Portland, Oregon and Fort . The Bridge of the Gods is a toll bridge spanning the Columbia River to connect SR in Washington to I in Oregon. The bridge is owned and operated by the Port of Cascade Locks in the city of Cascade Locks, Oregon. It is open 24 hours per day, days per year.
